What Is Culturally Appropriate Care?

Culturally appropriate care ensures that the services and care provided gives a ‘home from home’ feeling by prioritising and applying the right levels of sensitivity to everyone’s cultural identity and heritage. It requires being alert and and responsive to beliefs that might be determined by cultural heritage. Cultural identity and heritage covers a range of things from ethnicity, nationality or religion; to someone’s sexuality or gender identity. It can be said that those that consider themselves as LGBTQ+ would have a particular culture, and so would people that are hard of hearing and use British Sign Language. All in all, culturally appropriate care ensures three things; person centred care, dignity and respect, and the need for consent.

Our Approach To Cultural Identity & Heritage

Midlands Care are proud to continue their journey and prioritise their approach to cultural identity, heritage and inclusivity within Care, Colleagues and the Community.

By doing so, Midlands Care are able to not only comply, but raise the bar and specialise in three regulations within the Health and Social Care Act 2008. These are Regulation 9: Person-Centred Care, Regulation 10: Dignity & Respect and Regulation 11: Need for Consent. We do this by incorporating a variety of small, yet incredibly important pieces of information within our electronic care planning system. From asking our residents or their representatives questions and trying to understand their preferences to being naturally curious in how we can understand background and heritage in order to help people live their fullest lives. We try to understand a resident’s history, and continue to invest in our colleagues given our Investors in People accreditation. This means we have colleagues from a diverse background, to ensure that the cultural connection between residents and colleagues are genuine, compassionate and pure. We celebrate cultural differences, and allow residents to truly be themselves every day by providing them an inclusive environment and services. From celebrating religious festivals such as Christmas, Easter, Vaisakhi, Diwali, Eid and Ramadan to providing multi-faith rooms as a form of rightfully deserved respect to each individual’s background and heritage.

Although all of our homes have the right level of understanding, skills and resources to prioritise cultural diversity, identification and respect for choices and preferences; The New Wycliffe – Care Home Leicester – is a ‘home from home’ which specialises in providing multi-cultural care and services to all of its residents. Midlands Care continues to invest in The New Wycliffe – Care Home Leicester, and are proud to offer a multi-faith room. As well as including religious beliefs and background within the electronic care plans, the multi-faith room allows our residents to have a safe haven, where they can carry out religious practices. The multi-faith room proudly offers amenities to allow practice for Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Sikhism, Hinduism and Buddhism and more. We will make sure to continue our investment in our multi-faith room, our colleagues and other related resources to ensure that you have access to the right level of services and care.
